Skin Cancer Clinic

The Clinic was established in 1990 by Dr. Gahhos exclusively for the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

The Skin Cancer Clinic is an important component of the facility. The Clinic was founded exclusively for the treatment of the world's most common malignancy, cancer of the skin. The incidence and mortality from skin cancer has increased tremendously during the past several decades. The mission of the Skin Cancer Clinic:

  1. Encourage the early detection of skin cancers when they are almost always curable.
  2. Improve skin cancer care by concentrating exclusively on the treatment of skin malignancies.

An annual or bi-annual skin exam by a physician, and self-examination of your skin once a month is the best way to detect early warning signs of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma, the three main types of skin cancer.

Most of the patients are referred to the Clinic by a dermatologist, family physician or other specialist. Dr. Gahhos also follows and treats a select group of his own patients. He selects from several available modalities to treat the cancer based on each particular circumstance. Possible treatment options include:

  1. Excision and plastic surgical reconstruction.
  2. Excision and healing naturally.
  3. Electro-destruction and curettage.
  4. Radiation Therapy.
  5. Excision using frozen section control.
  6. Mohs Chemosurgery.

Most skin cancers are treated surgically. Dr. Gahhos is an experienced plastic surgeon who has performed over 20,000 procedures. His main concern is complete excision of the cancer and the best reconstruction possible to restore the integrity of the involved area of the body. Special consideration is given to facial areas.

The majority of patients with skin cancers referred to the Skin Cancer Clinic have large, complex cases that require the expertise of a plastic surgeon. However, smaller and simpler skin cancers are also treated with equal concern.

Dr. Gahhos holds frequent skin cancer screenings that are free to the public. The doctor checks the areas of the body that concerns the patient and makes recommendations as to follow-up treatment. The patients are then referred back to their primary physician with a form showing the findings.

Dr. Gahhos is considered a specialist in the area of skin cancer. Area dermatologists send their patients to the facility for reconstruction after Mohs surgery or for primary treatment and reconstruction of facial skin cancers. Dr. Gahhos treats over 1200 skin cancers a year, and performs over 4,000 surgical procedures.
